Powerlifting Team

Did you know we have a Powerlifting Team here in Madison?

Powerlifting has deep roots in ancient traditions of strength training, as men lifted stones to prove their strength and manhood. Modern powerlifting emerged in the 1950’s in the United States and United Kingdom, as strength athletes looked to compete in lifts other than the three Olympic lifts (clean and press, snatch, and clean and jerk). Today, powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts.   These lifts include the squat, bench press, and deadlift. These lifts still require a lot of skill.  There is also a set standard for each lift.  It is a popular sport in just about every country on earth, and the interest is steadily growing!

Competition rules vary, especially when it comes to what supportive equipment may be used.  There are many different organizations to choose from.  You will want to research to see what rule sets you would like to compete under.  A few of the major ones are:

United States Powerlifting Association (USPA)   *This is our Preferred Organization*

USA Powerlifting (USAPL)

World Powerlifting Congress  (WPL)

and many others.    If you desire certain equipment or rules, one of these may appeal more than the others.
